Metal Separator with Y-Type Rejection Mechanism for Spent Coffee Grounds

A coffee waste recycling company collects spent coffee grounds (SCG) from coffee shops and food-processing facilities and processes them into reusable materials.

After collection, the spent coffee grounds are dried and further processed through grinding, conveying, and screening before being used for applications such as biomass fuel, absorbent materials, or other recycled products. During collection and processing, small metal contaminants may enter the coffee grounds from collection containers, processing equipment, grinders, conveyors, or maintenance operations. To protect downstream equipment and maintain the quality of the recycled material, the client needed a metal separation system specifically designed for coffee grounds.

The Client’s Challenges

Unlike conventional granular materials, dried coffee grounds have several characteristics that make metal separation more challenging.

Dusty Processing Environment

Dry coffee grounds generate considerable dust during conveying and processing. The metal separator therefore needs a dust-resistant design to maintain stable operation and reduce the impact of dust accumulation on the equipment.

Powdery Material
The material consists of relatively fine, irregular particles rather than uniform plastic pellets or large granules. The separation system must therefore be designed specifically for powder and fine bulk materials while maintaining smooth material flow.

Continuous Production
The coffee grounds are continuously conveyed to downstream processing equipment. The client wanted to remove contaminated material without interrupting the main material flow or causing excessive product loss.

COSO Customized Solution
COSO provides a metal separator with a Y-type design, specially for powdery material such as spent coffee grounds. The separator was installed in the material conveying line before the coffee grounds entered the next processing stage. As the dried coffee grounds passed through the detection section, the system continuously monitored the material for ferrous and stainless steel contaminants. When metal contamination was detected, the Y-type rejection mechanism quickly rejected the contaminated material into the reject outlet, while metal-free coffee grounds continued through the main material path.

Y-Type Rejection for Powdery Materials

The Y-type separation structure is designed specially for powdery and fine bulk materials. When a metal contaminant is detected, the rejection mechanism changes the material flow direction and separates the contaminated portion from the metal-free material. This allows the system to perform rapid separation without stopping the entire production line. For the client, this was particularly important because the spend coffee grounds were continuously conveyed and needed to enter subsequent drying, grinding, or material-processing stages without interruption.

Dust-Resistant Design

The metal separator with Y-type design was configured according to the client’s dusty operating environment. Its design helps reduce the influence of coffee-ground dust on the detection and separation process while supporting stable operation during continuous production.

Minimizing Qualified Material Loss

One of the client’s concerns was the removing contaminants should not result in excessive loss of usable coffee grounds. The separator therefore focuses the rejection action on the contaminated material stream rather than unnecessarily interrupting the main product flow. This helps the client recover more qualified spent coffee grounds while effectively removing metal contaminants.

Application Process

The client ‘s processing line can be summarized as:

Spent coffee grounds collection → Drying → Grinding / Processing → Metal Separation → Screening / Processing →Recycled Material

The metal separator acts as a protection point before the coffee grounds enter the critical downstream processing equipment. If metal contamination is detected, the contaminated material is diverted before it can enter the subsequent equipment.

Results

After integrating the COSO metal separator with Y-type rejection mechanism into the coffee-ground processing line, the client gained continuous metal contamination protection for the dry material. The solution helped the client:

• Detect metal contaminants in dry spent coffee grounds

• Handle powdery and dusty material more reliably

• Separate contaminated material without stopping the main production flow

• Reduce the loss of qualified coffee grounds during rejection

• Protect downstream processing equipment from metal damage

• Improve contamination control before subsequent material processing

The customized design demonstrates how metal separation can be adapted to challenging powder applications where dust, material characteristics, continuous conveying, and safety requirements must be consider together.
